Learning the SPRAT Curriculum: Hitches

Hitches

The following more advanced knots must be demonstrated in addition to the core knots that are part of the L1 syllabus

During your SPRAT Evaluation, L2 and L3 techs will be asked to demonstrate competence tying and dressing a:

  • 3-Wrap Prusik Hitch
    • how this hitch is used will determine the MBS of the cord. The prusik cord must be 2mm (or smaller) than the rope it's being used on.
  • Tied-off Münter hitch
    • if you use a releasable half hitch on a bight or mule stitch to tie this off, another knot or hitch must also be used to "lock" the system.

You should also understand the main applications, strengths, and limitations of each of these knots.

During your Evaluation, you can demonstrate dressing both hitches as a separate exercise, or as part of another relevant maneuver on your syllabus. SPRAT recommends pairing this exercise with your demonstration of rigging and operating a rope access system pre-rigged to lower and/or of a pitch head break in and lower.

We’ll go into further detail on all of the above during your training week.

Most Common Discrepancies to Avoid:

  1. The knots have not been properly dressed.
  2. Mule hitch or half hitch on a bight has not been followed by a secondary backup hitch, knot or clip to prevent an inadvertent release.

Practice tying these knots every opportunity that you have. Over time, they'll basically become second nature.
